One of the Voices in Your Head Has Your Answers

I have to give credit to my love for the title of this post. We were joking about both a comedic TV show and our experiences working through leadership seminar assignments, and it hit me—one of the voices in our heads really does have our answers.

If you’ve ever watched older cartoons, you might remember the scene where a character is torn between two opposing voices—one angelic, urging them to “do the right thing,” and the other devilish, tempting them to make a bad choice. It’s a classic image that many of us are familiar with.

Interestingly, I haven’t seen this reference in cartoons for a while. It seems to have faded from the newer generations’ media. But looking back, maybe the creators weren’t too far off. The two voices on the character's shoulders were often depicted with features similar to the character itself—one pleading with love and goodness, and the other trying to lead them astray with temptation.

While this dynamic may seem overly simplistic—reduced to just right and wrong—I think it reflects something very real about our internal struggles.

In my own life, I’ve come to simplify the voices in my head into three main sources: the voice of God/Holy Spirit, my own voice, and the voice of the enemy (or evil, satan/devil or whatever you might call it). Nowadays, we often refer to the enemy’s voice as “negative self-talk” or our “gremlins,” but the essence remains the same.

The voice of self-doubt and self-hatred seems louder these days—perhaps because we are finally recognizing how much internal conflict so many of us face. But at the core of it all, there’s a choice: which voice will we trust? Which one will we lean on to shape our own voice in this world?

My experience of God’s voice is that it always comes from a place of love, often in a gentle whisper even with His all-knowing authority. It may sometimes feel like it’s just my thoughts, but compared to the voice of fear, the voice of God feels like a calming presence that draws me toward peace.

On the other hand, the voices of negativity and fear—the voices of the enemy—are so much louder. It’s a constant battle: love versus fear.

The Father, who is love and embodies that love through Jesus Christ, always speaks from a place of light and love. But the enemy or even our own self-doubt, often fueled by fear and limitation, can overshadow that gentle voice.

I’ve come to see: life isn’t just about “right versus wrong.” It’s not that simple. Life is filled with nuances, with an endless spectrum of choices that invite us into new possibilities every single day. It’s not just about black and white; there’s a whole range of colors we can choose from in each moment.

So, which voice do you follow?

From the very beginning, God gave us the gift of choice. He placed the “forbidden” tree in the garden, giving us the freedom to choose. Why?

He loves us so much that He values our ability to choose freely each day.

And if you substitute the word “love” with “trust” in that sentence, you begin to see the profound relationship between love and trust.

For me, I try to choose the voice of love instead of the voice of fear. I walk each day learning what love, at the level of God, sounds and looks like. At first, it wasn’t as clear as I’d hoped, but that’s okay. We don’t have to have it all figured out.

I’m not being tested on how well I hear the voice of God.

Let that freedom sink into your soul that we aren't being tested on how well "we perform."

If you haven’t yet, check out our post on validation for more on that.

I remember a time when I was at my lowest, lying on the floor, overwhelmed by my worst nightmare. In that moment, the simple truth that changed everything became clear: to change the world, all I had to do was love God, love others, and love myself. That’s it. The greatest commandment.

So today, let His love guide you through every moment. Let it shape your experience, fill your heart, and lead you toward peace.

Abundant blessings to you today and always,

Nick
